Academy of
Medicine of Richmond
Staten Island,
New York
In 1990, the Richmond County Medical Society established the Academy of Medicine of Richmond whose primary goal is to provide continuing medical education activities for local physicians and allied health professionals which augment the educational programs offered in a traditional institutional setting. These programs are designed to enhance the standards of medical practice, as well as to promote collegiality among medical professionals. The Academy of Medicine of Richmond is accredited by the Medical Society of the State of New York to award Continuing Medical Education credits for physicians.
Internists, Pediatricians and Surgeons have each formed a specialty section within the Academy which provide CME programs of specific interest to the needs of their respective specialties. In addition to physicians, dentists, podiatrists, psychologists and physicians assistants may join as Associate Fellows of the Academy of Medicine and are invited to participate in lectures and other activities sponsored by the Academy.
The Academy of Medicine sponsors an Annual Residents’ and Fellows’ Research Paper Competition for residents and fellows in training programs on Staten Island.
As patient advocates and community leaders, Fellows and Associate Fellows of the Academy participate in forums that directly impact the health of local residents, including environmental impact studies and immunizations outreach programs. In order to address the increase in youth violence, the Pediatric Section has established a Speakers' Bureau which offers the services of medical professionals for student and parent forums on a variety of health-related topics.

Dr. Maese served as President of the Richmond County Medical Society in 2004 and is currently the elected Governor for the New York Downstate II Region of the American College of Physicians as well as the Vice President of the Academy of Medicine of Richmond. His strong sense of civic responsibility has propelled him to action in diverse areas, leading physicians groups on his way. He has developed a successful program to encourage community blood donations by partnering with the Medical Society to local businesses who sponsor donors. He is the Medical Director for the Annual Autism Walk, which is a fund-raising initiative for Autism Speaks. Moreover, he regularly serves as a medical volunteer at several sporting events, including the World Cup and the NYC Marathon. He voluntarily serves as the physician supervisor of the Automated External Defribulators (AEDs) at multiple sites throughout New York City including several High Schools, Little Leagues and the New York City Council.
Additionally, Dr. Maese trains the public in CPR. He established a clothing drive to support a local charity which helps unwed mothers assimilate into the work force. He is a tireless advocate for patient access to care by lobbying local legislators and through his service on the Board of NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. Furthermore, Dr.. Maese has quietly nurtured several people through significant transitions and in the process, mentored them to professions in healthcare. He has been a diligent volunteer and advocate for the community in which he lives and the profession he so ably serves.
